Instagram for Business- It’s A Slow Go

Dear Reader-

As you may or may not know, I am not what one would call……techno savvy. Before I started renting a chair in a salon I didn’t need a fancy pants cell phone. Mine flipped open and it’s biggest advance was it had a camera. Once I started needing to use Square as payment, it became apparent I had to join this century.

So I got a smartphone, and with that phone came the ability to advance my paltry social media standing. I am already on Pintrest, YouTube, Facebook, my blog….well, I guess it’s not totally paltry. I only use social media for work purposes, as Hubs and I are extremely private. Enter stage left-Instagram. I am asthecurlturns56. I have a few followers, 150 or so, and I follow about as many. I post hair that I do, food I make, and anything that has to do with my 1950’s housewife brand/life. I have found that I really like Instagram. I love seeing other people’s pictures and what they are doing, although there are a few obsessive posters that could do with a few less uploads. I certainly don’t need to see seven selfies a day, although I do love a good selfie. I like connecting with total strangers far away over fun things, like tv programs or James Dean.

The issue is getting more followers in order to help build my updo business specifically. I roll updos all the time on my severed heads and post them, careful not to make it look like my manikin head. Lots of directed hashtags, all very specific. Post post post, with such slow results. I am gaining followers, but it feels real slllooooooowwwwwww. Perseverence and patience? Yep. Grandma says good things come to those who wait, but As The Curl Turns knows waiting can be challenging sometimes.

Sincerely,

Pumpkin Pie Hair Accessory, DIY

Dear Reader-

I have been asked many times about my unconventional hair accessories. The coffin, the vegetables, the party umbrellas….how did I make them? So when I went to start my latest project, pumpkin pie, I took notes.

The idea came from one of my clients, as we were discussing what food (fake food that is) I could use for my Thanksgiving accessory. I couldn’t find a fake turkey leg to save my life, so my client said “hey, pumpkin pie!” Oh yes.

Two types of felt, a pie tin, craft foam, fake whipped cream, (thanks to Etsy) and I am on my way.

Now for the “crust.” I cut the edges wavy and glued it to the pie tin as if I had laid in an actual crust. I then added the foam inside.

Now to add the “pumpkin” overlay.

image

Can’t forget the whipped cream! Just a few dollops.

image

Now the hard part- how to attach it to my hair??? My usual duckbill clip won’t work because the bottom of the pie tin is totally flat. It will be lifted on that side if I use one of these.

So I decide to go just with bobby pins, which is as flatĀ as I can get.

Done! In and secure.

“Just As Long As It’s Cute”

Dear Reader-

I hear this often at the beauty parlour, and I must say- it makes me giggle a little inside. It is a perfectly natural thing for a client to say of course, they want their hair cute. But the obviousness of the statement sometimes makes me smile a bit wryly. I am in the beauty industry. This is code for the “cute” industry. If I do not make you beautiful, if you leave my chair and you don’t have something cute, I need to change jobs. If I want to give you something ugly, I am a sadist and I need to change jobs. Maybe to something involving patent leather or latex. I digress.

The point is this-cute is the way of the gun. It is the goal of us all, so I will ask you for more details about what you want. You may not know, hence the “cute.” What is that to you? Length, layers, curl, styling, perky ponytails, let’s discuss it all. We will discuss what you don’t like as well, it is all with the same end result in mind. Grandma says babies are cute, women are beautiful. As The Curl Turns absolutely agrees.

Happy Turkey-

p.s-not a turkey fan? There is no rule that says you have to take some when it comes around the table. Make it a Thanksgiving of your favorite sides instead.
